In 2 Kings Chapter 2, we find the story of Elijah’s ascension to heaven in God’s chariot. From the King James version, the 11th verse reads:

And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted both (Elijah and Elisha) asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

What are our options for explaining this story?

1. We could take the mainstream scientific skeptical view and say this is a mythological story or a fanciful description of a meteorological event that carried Elijah off.
2. We could believe the standard Biblical interpretation that this is a description of God, creator of this vast universe, taking Elijah to heaven.

Let’s think again.Fire? Wind? A chariot?

We could go with the myth idea. That’s always the easy out for things we can’t or don’t wish to try to explain. No, let’s try to explain.

I think we can rule out a meteorological event. Unless the writer of this text was the most fanciful of poets, it’s hard to see how that explains this passage.

God of the Universe? Would the God of the Universe need to make use of technology that, looked at through modern eyes, sounds a lot like an engine? Would he need to make use of a craft that might be described as a chariot? It seems unlikely.

Could the driver of this chariot the took Elijah away into the sky in a whirlwind be the description of a technologically advanced being, a god small g?

To me, if this event happened as described and we have no reason to question the eyewitness, this seems like the most logical explanation to me.
